Dyslexia Tidbit
Dyslexia Awareness Month
Dyslexia Awareness Month is celebrated worldwide in October to raise awareness of dyslexia, a learning difference that affects reading, writing, and spelling.
Each week, we will highlight dyslexics who have made contributions to our society.
Here are some more this week.
Tom Cruise
Blockbuster action film actor Cruise was diagnosed with Dyslexia aged seven but that didn’t stop him. ‘I’d try to concentrate on what I was reading, then I’d get to the end of the page and have very little memory of anything I’d read’. He eventually adopted unique techniques to learn his lines and went on to be a multi award winning Hollywood star!
Jim Carrey
The two-time Golden Globe-winner rose to fame as a cast member of the Fox sketch comedy In Living Color. Leading roles in Ace Ventura, Dumb & Dumber and The Mask established him as a bankable comedy actor.
Walt Disney
An American icon who built the Disney Empire with his brother and is responsible for the growth of animation production. The popular Disney Land Parks have since been developed globally.
Albert Einstein
One of the most influential physicists in history who developed the laws of relativity and shaped the ways we think of the world today.
Sally Gardner
English children’s writer and illustrator. She won both the Costa Children’s Book Award and the Carnegie Medal for Maggot Moon. Sally says, ‘I strongly believe that dyslexia is like a Rubik’s Cube: it takes time to work out how to deal with it but once you do, it can be the most wonderful gift.’

A Note from the Principal
How wonderful it was to be back in school this past week! We hope everyone's power has been restored although it appears that Internet outages are still affecting some of our families and faculty/staff. The SCDE via our charter school district has instructed schools to revise their calendars to reflect that three of the five days missed are made up. The LABCS Board will be meeting to look at this, and as soon as the revised calendar is approved, it will be sent to our families and updated on our school website.
A Note from the Assistant Principal
Teachers continue to nominate students who display the characteristics of our Dragon Character Pillars (Respect, Responsibility, Perseverance). These students are recognized on our morning announcements. We encourage these students to share this information with their parents. These students will also receive a Dragon Character Dress Down Pass.
A Note from the Front Office
If your student is absent please submit a parent note or a doctor's note within 3 days of your child returning to school. Please send all school excuses to Michelle Tennant at mtennant@labcharterschool.org.
If you are bringing your student to school late, 8:15 or later, you must walk in with them and sign them in.
A Note from the Reading Coach
Due to the school closure this past week, the Open House and the 3rd Grade Parent/Guardian Virtual Informational Night has been rescheduled to Thursday, October 24 from 3:30-4:30.
Any 3rd-8th grade student that would like to participate in our Learning Ally Challenge, be sure to login and keep reading to earn your spot for a prize! If you need the login information, please contact your child's homeroom teacher for it.
A Note from the Development Director
We have kicked off our Annual Fundraising Campaign and we've gotten our first gift! On Thursday, Ms. Heidi and Ms. Debbie attended the Foothills Community Foundation Annual Distribution Event where a donor gave Lakes & Bridges a $5,000 gift to build momentum for the Annual Campaign. We have a goal of raising $50,000 by the end of 2024... so only $45,000 to go!
Please consider giving to our Annual Campaign! No gift is too small (or too big!). These funds provide flexible support to help bridge the gap between the limited public funding we receive and the cost of providing the distinctive education that makes Lakes & Bridges such a unique place for our students, families, teachers, and staff. You may give online here, you may give by a check made out to Lakes and Bridges Charter School with "Annual Campaign" in the memo line, you may give by cash in an envelope with your name and "Annual Campaign" on it and given to the front office, or you may even contact Debbie Vaughn ( [email protected]) to transfer a gift of stock.
Thank you for supporting our student innovators and those who serve them!
A Note from the Student Wellness Coordinator
The SEL word of the week is aptitude (n.): a natural ability or talent
Competency: Self-Awareness
All of us need to identify our strengths (and weaknesses) so that we can continually grow in our abilities. Recognizing both strengths and weaknesses allows for a deeper understanding of ourselves; a better self-awareness. By identifying strengths, we can promote self-confidence, easy successes, and areas in which we may be able to become leaders. By identifying weaknesses, we can learn limitations, and set goals for improvement. This week in SEL, I will ask students to share an aptitude with the class. As we listen to others, we will look for commonalities and differences in our talents. I will also ask them to identify one area in which they want to improve.
A Note from the Student Council
Student Council Elections
Interest forms for Student Council were due this past Friday. We are no longer accepting new candidates for Student Council for the 2024-2025 school year.
Candidates were given a checklist printed on green paper to help them keep track of requirements and due dates. They are as follows:
- For those running for an officer position, your teacher recommendations are due on Friday, 10/18.
- For all candidates, your campaign poster is due on Monday, 10/21. This must be on a standard size poster board (22"x28"). Make sure to include your name, position running for, and a slogan!
- Campaign videos will be due on Monday, 10/28. These can be emailed to [email protected]. Videos must include candidate's name, position running for, slogan, and be between 20 seconds and 1 minute long. Please avoid any particular political alignment. Students don't necessarily have to stand and talk in front of the camera. Students may utilize apps like iMovie and the like to be creative in their campaign approach.
**A reminder that we will not accept any requirements past the due date. Failure to turn them in on time is cause for removal from the election. We will, however, accept early requirements. Students can turn in recommendations, posters, and videos sooner than the due date. We pride our Student Council on their responsibility and initiative!
Chick-fil-A Biscuit Sales
CFA biscuits will be available on Friday, October 25. For your child to receive one, please have your order placed by Tuesday afternoon, October 22.
