Dyslexia Tidbit
How to Help Kids With Dyslexia
Fortunately, there are evidence-based supports to help children with dyslexia improve their reading skills, such as:
- Multi-sensory instruction in decoding skills
- Repetition and review of skills
- Intensity of intervention—that is, more than being pulled out of class once a week for extra help
- Small group or individual instruction
- Teaching phonological skills
- Drilling sight words
- Teaching comprehension strategies, to help kids derive meaning from what they’re reading
Reading programs that have been shown to be effective for kids with dyslexia are Orton-Gillingham and its derivatives.
What doesn’t help? Simple tutoring in a conventional learning center that is not focused on remediation or building missing skills.

A Note from the Testing Coordinator
CogAT testing begins next week, October 16-20, for 2nd grade students. Please make sure your child gets a good night's sleep and has a healthy and hearty breakfast each morning. We will begin promptly at 8:30 each morning, so please have your child to school on time. If you have any questions, please reach out to Mrs. Wendye Henderson, who is also our Testing Coordinator, at [email protected]
A Note from the Literacy Coach
Our students and staff have ended the first nine weeks of instruction on a high note. We have so many literacy highlights happening in our classrooms. Parents, be on the lookout for several upcoming events for students and families in the next few weeks. For example, we will begin Book Buddies where our older students will be reading with our younger students, our 8th graders are now able to apply to join our newly established Literacy Leaders Club, and our school will be celebrating National Family Literacy Day on November 1st. All of these events and more will be showcased in our weekly newsletters. I look forward to guiding our teachers and students to reach new limits this school year as we take on #growthandgoals! If you have any questions, please feel to reach out to Mrs. Jessica Hudson, our Reading Coach, at [email protected]

Community Outreach - Camp Merry Times
Camp Merry Times is an organization that provides a free camp experience to children with cancer. Their mission is to help give sick children a safe opportunity to enjoy typical childhood pastimes. Camp Merry Times will be having a Trunk or Dash 5K Fundraiser at the end of the month and are looking for donations of Halloween candy to aid in their cause. If you are able to donate, please send the bags of individually wrapped candy to school with your child indicating it is for Camp Merry Times.
