Dyslexia Tidbit
Dyslexia Awareness Month
Dyslexia Awareness Month is celebrated worldwide in October to raise awareness of dyslexia, a learning difference that affects reading, writing, and spelling.
Each week, we will highlight dyslexics who have made contributions to our society.
Here are some more this week.
Whoopi Goldberg
Comedian, political activist but more recently talk show host. Whoopi is one of a handful of people to win an Oscar, a Grammy, a Tony and an Emmy.
John F Kennedy, George Washington and George W Bush
All of these Presidents of the United States of America were believed to be dyslexic.
Keira Knightley
Keira gained widespread recognition in 2002 after co-starring in the film Bend It Like Beckham and achieved international fame in 2003 after appearing as Elizabeth Swann in the Pirates of the Caribbean film series. Since then, she has succeeded in many more world-renowned performances.

A Note from the Principal
This past Sunday, October 13, the LABCS Board approved a revised 2024-2025 school calendar based on the SCDE's guidance and the SCPCSD recommendation to revise schedules that reflect three inclement weather make-up days.
These three inclement weather days were already built into our calendar (one in April and two after we got out for the school year). To not have to come back after Memorial Day, we moved those two days in May (May 27 and 28) to January 3 and 6, and the April 18 one to February 17. Also, the make-up days would have to be made before the other two days were waived, which was another reason we moved the make-up days earlier in the year.
The board also made a motion to waive the two remaining days of the five missed, so these two waived days are built into the calendar for April 18 and 21. The 21st was a day off with the 18th as an inclement weather make-up day.
We have the option of moving our inclement weather days to eLearning; however, we are only allowed a total of five in a school year and have already used one, so we are unsure at this time if the January and February days will be eLearning since we will still be in the middle of winter, and we don't know how the winter season will look. At this time, they will be in-person.
With the new calendar, the 1st quarter end date has been moved from October 8 to October 17. This means that report cards will not go home until close to October 24 or 25.
You can access a pdf copy of the new and revised calendar here.
A Note from the Assistant Principal
Teachers continue to nominate students who display the characteristics of our Dragon Character Pillars (Respect, Responsibility, Perseverance). These students are recognized on our morning announcements. We encourage these students to share this information with their parents. These students will also receive a Dragon Character Dress Down Pass.
A Note from the Front Office
If your student is absent please submit a parent note or a doctor's note within 3 days of your child returning to school. Please send all school excuses to Michelle Tennant at mtennant@labcharterschool.org.
If you are bringing your student to school late, 8:15 or later, you must walk in with them and sign them in.
A Note from the Reading Coach
Our 8th grade students had the chance to apply for our Literacy Leaders Club. This club is for 8th graders only and allows them to demonstrate leadership skills in the area of literacy. They will be book buddies with our younger students, create ideas for school-wide literacy events, and participate in leading our Book Fairs and other literacy activities throughout this school year. Ask your 8th grade student if they are now part of our Literacy Leaders Club.
Due to the school closure this past week, the Open House and the 3rd Grade Parent/Guardian Virtual Informational Night has been rescheduled to Thursday, October 24 from 3:30-4:30.
Any 3rd-8th grade student that would like to participate in our Learning Ally Challenge, be sure to login and keep reading to earn your spot for a prize! If you need the login information, please contact your child's homeroom teacher for it.
A Note from the Development Director
We have kicked off our Annual Fundraising Campaign and we've gotten our first gift! On Thursday, Ms. Heidi and Ms. Debbie attended the Foothills Community Foundation Annual Distribution Event where a donor gave Lakes & Bridges a $5,000 gift to build momentum for the Annual Campaign. We have a goal of raising $50,000 by the end of 2024... so only $45,000 to go!
Please consider giving to our Annual Campaign! No gift is too small (or too big!). These funds provide flexible support to help bridge the gap between the limited public funding we receive and the cost of providing the distinctive education that makes Lakes & Bridges such a unique place for our students, families, teachers, and staff. You may give online here, you may give by a check made out to Lakes and Bridges Charter School with "Annual Campaign" in the memo line, you may give by cash in an envelope with your name and "Annual Campaign" on it and given to the front office, or you may even contact Debbie Vaughn ( [email protected]) to transfer a gift of stock.
Thank you for supporting our student innovators and those who serve them!
A Note from the Student Wellness Coordinator
The SEL word of the week is Initiative (noun): energy shown in beginning something
Competency: Self-Management
October is Bullying Prevention Month, so for the next two weeks in SEL classes, we will focus on understanding what bullying is, the roles people can play in a bullying situation, and ways to prevent it from happening. Upper elementary students will also learn about cyberbullying and digital citizenship.
A Note from the Student Council
Student Council Elections
Interest forms for Student Council were due this past Friday. We are no longer accepting new candidates for Student Council for the 2024-2025 school year.
Candidates were given a checklist printed on green paper to help them keep track of requirements and due dates. They are as follows:
- For those running for an officer position, your teacher recommendations are due on Friday, 10/18.
- For all candidates, your campaign poster is due on Monday, 10/21. This must be on a standard size poster board (22"x28"). Make sure to include your name, position running for, and a slogan!
- Campaign videos will be due on Monday, 10/28. These can be emailed to [email protected]. Videos must include candidate's name, position running for, slogan, and be between 20 seconds and 1 minute long. Please avoid any particular political alignment. Students don't necessarily have to stand and talk in front of the camera. Students may utilize apps like iMovie and the like to be creative in their campaign approach.
**A reminder that we will not accept any of the required items past the due dates. Failure to turn them in on time is cause for removal from the election. We will, however, accept early requirements. Students can turn in recommendations, posters, and videos sooner than the due date. We pride our Student Council on their responsibility and initiative!
Chick-fil-A Biscuit Sales
CFA biscuits will be available on Friday, October 25. For your child to receive one, please have your order placed by Tuesday afternoon, October 22.
