Dyslexia Tidbit
Dyslexia Awareness Month
Dyslexia Awareness Month is celebrated worldwide in October to raise awareness of dyslexia, a learning difference that affects reading, writing, and spelling.
Each week, we will highlight dyslexics who have made contributions to our society.
Here are some more this week.
Benjamin Zephaniah
Benjamin Zephaniah was a writer, poet, actor and musician who, as well as entertaining us with his amazing poetry, championed people with dyslexia and the importance of enjoying reading. He proved that having dyslexia does not stop a person from being great with words.

A Note from the Principal
At the end of each quarter, we would like to get feedback from the families of current students so that we can continue to grow and improve. To fill out the survey, please click here.
In case you are interested in seeing what your child(ren)'s teachers are covering this year in their standards classes (non-PIE classes) by grade level, please click here for the Family Friendly Guides to the Standards, or here for the SCDE SCCCR Standards (they are the same, but one is more "user friendly" for parents, and the other is a lot more detailed and not as "user friendly"). These are found on our website under "Students/Parents."
A Note from the Assistant Principal
Teachers continue to nominate students who display the characteristics of our Dragon Character Pillars (Respect, Responsibility, Perseverance). These students are recognized on our morning announcements. We encourage these students to share this information with their parents. These students will also receive a Dragon Character Dress Down Pass.
A Note from the Front Office
School picture makeup day is November 30th. Please do not have your child wear green since the background is a green screen, and it will blend in.
If your student is absent please submit a parent note or a doctor's note within 3 days of your child returning to school. Please send all school excuses to Michelle Tennant at mtennant@labcharterschool.org.
If you are bringing your student to school late, 8:15 or later, you must walk in with them and sign them in.
A Note from the Reading Coach
Any 3rd-8th grade student that would like to participate in our Learning Ally Challenge, be sure to login and keep reading to earn your spot for a prize! If you need the login information, please contact your child's homeroom teacher for it.
A Note from the Development Director
We have kicked off our Annual Fundraising Campaign!! Please consider giving to our Annual Campaign! No gift is too small (or too big!). These funds provide flexible support to help bridge the gap between the limited public funding we receive and the cost of providing the distinctive education that makes Lakes & Bridges such a unique place for our students, families, teachers, and staff. You may give online here, you may give by a check made out to Lakes and Bridges Charter School with "Annual Campaign" in the memo line, you may give by cash in an envelope with your name and "Annual Campaign" on it and given to the front office, or you may even contact Debbie Vaughn ( [email protected]) to transfer a gift of stock.
Thank you for supporting our student innovators and those who serve them!
A Note from the Student Wellness Coordinator
The SEL word of the week is dialect (n.): a variety of language used by members of a particular group
Competency: Self-Awareness
October is National Bullying Prevention Month. In SEL this week, we will continue to define bullying and the roles that different people play in a bullying situation. We will discuss strategies for preventing bullying and safe ways to address it if it is occurring. In grades 3-5, we will also learn about cyberbullying and digital citizenship.
