Dyslexia Tidbit
Dyslexia Awareness Month
Dyslexia Awareness Month is celebrated worldwide in October to raise awareness of dyslexia, a learning difference that affects reading, writing, and spelling.
Each week, we will highlight dyslexics who have made contributions to our society.
Here are just a few this week.
Dr Maggie Aderin-Pocock
Astronomer, space scientist and co-producer of the long running TV programme The Sky at Night with Chris Lintott. Maggie Aderin-Pocock is a research fellow in UCL Department of Science and Technology Studies and an Honorary Research Associate in UCL Department of Physics and Astronomy.
Orlando Bloom
Hollywood actor best known for his starring roles in Pirates of the Caribbean and Lord of the Rings. When he was discovered as dyslexic at school his mother encouraged him to take art and drama classes. Bloom continued on to appear in many Hollywood hits and made his Broadway stage debut as Romeo in Romeo and Juliet in August 2013 at the Richard Rodgers Theatre.
Richard Branson
Richard Branson is one of the most famous dyslexics in the world and is happy to share is story. Richard struggled in school and dropped out at age 16 – a decision that ultimately led to the creation of Virgin Records. His entrepreneurial projects started in the music industry and expanded into other sectors. He is now estimated to be worth over $5.7 billion. Branson is also known for his adventurous spirit and sporting achievements, including crossing oceans in a hot air balloon and becoming the third oldest person to fly to space at the age of 70.

A Note from the Principal
What an unprecedented time we have gone through this past week, and one some of us are continuing to go through. According to the survey sent out, 121 families have filled it out as of this morning. About 20% of our faculty/staff and families are still without power, and about 43% still have no access to the Internet. We know that almost all of our students did not have access to the Internet on the eLearning Day, and we will work with them to get this completed. Please do not worry about getting it completed before our intended return on Monday, October 7. We intend to be back on Monday as we know the structure is important for our students, especially since the majority of our families and faculty/staff have power restored. However, safety is our most important concern with our LABCS community. If you are in a position where you cannot safely get to the school on Monday, please let us know ( [email protected])
If you have not filled out the survey, please do so as this gives us feedback for Monday.
We will have a relaxed dress code for Monday and Tuesday based on parent feedback from the surveys. However, no leggings will be allowed unless under a dress, skirt, or skort, no short athletic shorts are allowable, and no rips or tears in pants. We understand that families have not had access to doing laundry or are still trying to get caught up with laundry.
Please let us know how we can best support you and your child(ren). We are here to offer the support necessary. We have tried to post as many services being offered on our school's FB page and will continue to as people share them with us.
In this together,
Heidi
A Note from the Assistant Principal
Teachers continue to nominate students who display the characteristics of our Dragon Character Pillars (Respect, Responsibility, Perseverance). These students are recognized on our morning announcements. We encourage these students to share this information with their parents. These students will also receive a Dragon Character Dress Down Pass.
A Note from the Front Office
If your student is absent please submit a parent note or a doctor's note within 3 days of your child returning to school. Please send all school excuses to Michelle Tennant at mtennant@labcharterschool.org.
If you are bringing your student to school late, 8:15 or later, you must walk in with them and sign them in.
A Note from the Reading Coach
Due to the school closure this past week, the Open House and the 3rd Grade Parent/Guardian Virtual Informational Night will be rescheduled. As soon as we have those dates, we will let you know.
Any 3rd-8th grade student that would like to participate in our Learning Ally Challenge, be sure to login and keep reading to earn your spot for a prize! If you need the login information, please reach out to your child's homeroom teacher.
A Note from the Student Wellness Coordinator
SEL Student Surveys
As a way to measure need and growth in our students' social-emotional learning, students in grades 3 through 8 will complete a survey through our SEL platform, Panorama Education. These surveys measure students' abilities in five competencies; Self-Awareness, Self-Management, Social Awareness, Responsible Decision Making, and Relationship Skills. The data from these surveys is used inclusively to guide the schoolwide initiative on SEL and is not shared outside of the school community. If you have any questions about this survey or are interested in seeing a sample of the survey, please contact Ms. Phifer at [email protected].
A Note from the Testing Coordinator
Testing Information for MAP data will go home soon with your child(ren) this week. If you have any questions about this data, please reach out to Mrs. Henderson at [email protected].
We are tentatively planning to continue with CogAT and IOWA testing with 2nd grade for this week. We will assess where students are as we ease back into school after this past week. We will keep the 2nd grade parents/guardians informed of this.
