Dyslexia Tidbit
How Is Dyslexia Diagnosed?
"Dyslexia is diagnosed through an evaluation that determines a deficit in reading ability and rules out other possible causes for the deficit, such as hearing problems, or social, environmental or cognitive factors. Usually, kids must wait until they are school-aged (or have had significant early reading instruction) to get an accurate assessment.
If you are concerned that your child is not meeting benchmarks for reading skills, you can request that your school district do an evaluation and then review the results with you. The evaluation will measure your child’s intellectual capacity and reading skills, to determine if there is an achievement gap.
If your child falls below average in skills like decoding, comprehension, word recognition, word retrieval, and reading fluency, your school district should recommend a plan to help bolster those skills.
If you aren’t satisfied with the caliber of the evaluation, you are free to seek out a private evaluation by a psychologist, a neuropsychologist, a reading specialist, a speech and language therapist, an educational evaluator or a school psychologist. The professional who does the evaluation should provide you with a report explaining the results and making specific recommendations for your child.
This outside evaluation can be used to make the case to your school district for support or accommodations for your child."

A Note from Administration
We hope you are able to relax and enjoy this 5-day weekend for students. It is hard to believe we are already 1/4th through this school year! Report Cards will go out toward the end of the week of October 16-20.
Some of you have asked who the man who began joining Ms. Heidi and Mrs. Henderson during morning car drop-off. This is Mrs. Kit's son, Yuri. Since the passing of her husband/his father, he comes to school in the morning with Mrs. Kit and joins us in the car line before walking to his job nearby. Many of the current 4th grade students know him from having Mrs. Kit last year in 3rd grade; however, we realized not everyone, especially the older students knows who he is. I would encourage your child to tell him "hello" in the mornings.

Community Outreach - Camp Merry Times
Camp Merry Times is an organization that provides a free camp experience to children with cancer. Their mission is to help give sick children a safe opportunity to enjoy typical childhood pastimes. Camp Merry Times will be having a Trunk or Dash 5K Fundraiser at the end of the month and are looking for donations of Halloween candy to aid in their cause. If you are able to donate, please send the bags of individually wrapped candy to school with your child indicating it is for Camp Merry Times.
A Note from the Student Wellness Coordinator
This week in SEL classes students learned how to define bullying. We use the acronym "RIP Bullying" to remember that bullying is a:
- repeated behavior, occurring more than once;
- intentional behavior, done on purpose to cause harm to someone; power struggle,
- there is some perceived idea of power of one person over the other; and
- that this is a behavior we want to put to rest!
Next week, we will discuss the different roles people take in bullying situations. The " Bullying Circle" was developed by Dan Olweus to illustrate how there are different roles in bullying and that there are opportunities for many people to stop bullying when it is occurring. We will begin discussing strategies for preventing bullying based on these roles.
