Do Vision Problems Cause Dyslexia?
The Southport CoLab and Florida Center for Reading Research created this fantastic infographic tackling common myths about dyslexia and vision. Spoiler Alert—-there’s no evidence that visual problems cause dyslexia, no evidence that treatment for convergence improves decoding or comprehension, and no evidence that visual interventions remediate dyslexia or learning disabilities.

A Note from the Principal
End-of-Quarter Survey
If you have not yet filled out the end-of-first-quarter survey, please click here. We are asking for parent/guardian names so that we can address any concerns.
A Note from the School Nurse
Students are not allowed to carry ANY medication them without physician permission, parent/guardian permission, and school permission to self-administer and self-monitor (SC Law S144). This includes over-the-counter pain relievers and allergy and cold medications. Over-the-counter medications can be stored in the nurse's office with parent permission (physician permission is not needed). The ONLY medications that can be in the student’s possession (with the physican permission) are for asthma, diabetes, and severe allergic reactions. If you need a medication permission form or have any questions please contact Nurse Dava at [email protected] for the form.
A Note from the Front Office
Reminder
If you have not yet paid your child(ren)'s supply and/or tech fees, ALL SUPPLY AND TECH FEES ARE PAST DUE. Please pay these online through MySchoolBucks or send in cash or a check.
Lost and Found
We have a lot of clothing and water bottles that belong to students but have not been claimed by them. They do not have any kind of identification on the labels or bottles. Please come by to see what belongs to your child. Anything left at Winter Break will be donated to those in need.
Absence Notes
If your student is absent please submit a parent note or a doctor's note within 3 days of your child returning to school. Please send all school excuses to Michelle Tennant at mtennant@labcharterschool.org.
If you bring your student to school late, 8:15 or later, you must walk in with them and sign them in.

Winter MAP Testing occurs the week of December 9-13 and December 16.
- December 9 and 10 - Grades 1-5
- December 11 and 12 - Grades 6-8
- December 13 and 16 - Make-Up Testing Days

The Scholastic Book Fair is coming on Monday, December 2 - Friday, December 6
Students will have multiple opportunities to shop with their class, and families are welcome to shop throughout the school day. Books make GREAT gifts at the holidays!

Our Annual Fundraising Campaign is still going strong! Until the end of the calendar year, we're focusing our fundraising efforts on monies that provide flexible support to help bridge the gap between the limited public funding we receive and the cost of making Lakes & Bridges the unique school that it is.
Fundraising goal = $50,000

Only $34,013 to go!

A Note from the Student Council
Santa Grams will be on sale beginning Monday, December 2nd through Thursday, December 19th.
- For $1.00 a student can send a note to a classmate or staff member.
- For $2.00 a student can send a note with a candy treat to a classmate or staff member.
Students can purchase these each morning in the Dragon's Den during morning arrival.
All Santa Grams are delivered on Fridays by the Student Council Elves!
Parents, if you'd like to send your child a Santa Gram, please email [email protected] and we'll be happy to set that up for you!
A Note from the Student Wellness Coordinator
Thanksgiving break is a great time to have conversations with your children about gratitude and to help them become more socially aware of those in their community. Here are some quick and easy ideas to incorporate SEL into your Thanksgiving break.
- Thank You Post Cards - Students can write postcards or thank you letters to friends, family, or members of the community.
- Daily Gratitude Prompts - Ask a question a day to prompt conversations about what your child is grateful for.
- Volunteer at local Food Banks like Harvest Hope
- Help a neighbor clean their yard or set up decorations for the holidays
Angel Tree
Our Angel Tree will be set up upon return from Thanksgiving Break on December 2nd. Please stop in the front office to grab a tag from the tree to help sponsor a child in our community during the holiday season. All gifts will be due to the school by Thursday, December 19.

Congratulations to Zeb D. for his winning submission! His artwork will be featured on this year's school yearbook cover.
There were so many creative designs, and we're proud of all the students who shared their artwork with the school.
Admissions Tours
We will start Admissions Tours when we return from Thanksgiving Break. These are designed to allow potential families the opportunity to see our school in action before and during the Open Enrollment period, which runs from January 1 through February 15.
If you are interested, these will be held on Tuesdays at 10:00 and Thursdays at 1:00. Please call the front office at 864-442-5580 to schedule a tour on one of these days. Space is limited for these tours, and these last about 30-45 minutes.
Dress Code Reminders
Shorts, skirts, skorts, and jumper dresses must be khaki, navy blue, grey, or black and possess a hem. Shorts, skirts and skorts should be worn at the normal waistline. Additionally, please note the following: shorts, skirts, skorts, and jumpers should not be higher than 2" above the knees.
No athletic shorts are allowed during the week, and no short athletic shorts are allowed on Monday Dress Theme Days or Friday Dress Down Days.
Electronic Devices Reminders
With the exceptions outlined below, the Lakes and Bridges Charter School policy prohibits cell phones and the use of the following electronic devices during school hours: digital cameras, electronic games and toys, laser pointers, laptop computers, tablets, iPads, or any other electronic devices. If your child’s IEP requires the use of such a device, Lakes and Bridges Charter School will provide the device for use during school hours.
Apple Watches or similar MUST BE in School Mode while on campus.
School hours are defined as beginning with the student’s arrival on campus as they exit their parent’s/guardian’s/carpool’s car during morning car line and ending when the student has entered their parent’s/guardian’s/carpool’s car to leave for the day. Students must adhere to the school’s established communication devices/cell phones/smart watches protocol as directed. Failure to adhere to the policy established will result in the following consequences:
- 1st offense – confiscation for the remainder of the school day (no exceptions)
- 2nd offense – the device is, devices are, not allowed to be at school for two weeks (no exceptions)
- 3rd offense – the device is, devices are, not allowed to be at school for the remainder of the school year (no exceptions)
What is Chronic Absenteeism?
Chronically absent students are defined as having missed 10% of the total days within a school year. Research shows that students with a history of chronic absenteeism face a serious risk of falling behind in school, thus making it more difficult for them to succeed in the classroom.
- All types of absences contribute to chronic absenteeism:
- Excused (Lawful) Absences
- Unexcused Absences
- Suspensions
- A student is absent if he or she is not physically on school grounds and is not participating in instruction or instruction-related activities at an approved off-grounds location for the school day.
Lawful Absences
- Lawful absences include but are not limited to
- (1) absences caused by a student’s own illness and whose attendance in school would endanger his or her health or the health of others,
- (2) absences due to an illness or death in the student’s immediate family,
- (3) absences due to a recognized religious holiday of the student’s faith, and
- (4) absences due to activities that are approved in advance by the principal.
