Who Were Orton and Gillingham?
"Samuel Torrey Orton (1879-1948), a neuropsychiatrist and pathologist, was a pioneer in focusing attention on reading failure and related language processing difficulties. He brought together neuroscientific information and principles of remediation. As early as the 1920s, he had extensively studied children with the kind of language processing difficulties now commonly associated with dyslexia and had formulated a set of teaching principles and practices for such children.
Anna Gillingham (1878-1963) was a gifted educator and psychologist with a superb mastery of the language. Working with Dr. Orton, she trained teachers and compiled and published instructional materials. Over the last half-century, the Orton-Gillingham Approach has been the seminal and most influential intervention designed expressly for remediating the language processing problems of children and adults with dyslexia.
Dr. Orton’s book is titled Reading, Writing, and Speech Problems in Children. He was among the first to move away from the concept of mere “remedial reading,” to treat all aspects of language as related, and to do so in a “language clinic.” OGA’s teaching is based on his understanding of neurology and neural connections in the building of memory.
Anna Gillingham, working with Bessie Stillman, developed the concept of the language triangle (auditory, visual, and kinesthetic). She organized the steps of language teaching, going from the simplest sounds in isolation, to syllables, words, phrases, and sentences. She understood the importance of building kinesthetic memory, of the role of handwriting and, for some students, of simultaneous oral spelling. She developed the system of rules and generalizations that lead to the cognitive aspect of the language, and she arranged everything in the The Gillingham Manual which remains our most important text."

A Note from the Front Office
No lunches will be served on February 9 and 12. Students will need to bring a lunch from home on those days.
Letters of Intent for families will be sent out via a Google Form on Monday, February 26, and will be due Friday, March 1. Please check your emails for the link on Monday, February 26.
A Note from the School Nurse
Medication Reminders
Prescription medications require a healthcare provider's signature to be administered at school. Medication must be dropped off in the front office by an adult in a pharmacy-labeled container. We are updating the policy in the Student Parent Handbook where it cannot be handed to an administrator in the carline anymore. We apologize for this inconvenience, but for safety and liability reasons, it needs to be handed into the front office or to the nurse.
Over-the-counter medications need to be in a new, unopened container and only require a parent's signature.
Please contact Mrs. Dava House, School Nurse, if you have any questions at (864) 671-6265 or [email protected].
A Note from the Testing Coordinator
Also, please make a note of the other testing dates this year. No appointments or trips should be planned during these dates. Just a reminder that state testing will be done on Chromebooks this year and not paper/pencil, so any extra practice typing, either through typing.com or you dictating lists (for example, grocery lists, things to do on the weekend, etc.), will be helpful.
If you have any questions, please reach out to Mrs. Wendye Henderson, our Testing Coordinator, at [email protected].
What Can I Do at Home to Help My Child?
If you would like to have some activities to reinforce what your child is learning at school, have them get on any one of the following sites to have continued practice in typing, academics, or reading (they should all have their login information to each of these sites since they use them as enrichment). If they don't remember their login information, please reach out to their homeroom teacher to get it. They should be able to access each of these from a personal device at home.
A Note from the Reading Coach
At LABCS we know that LEADERS MAKE READERS...so, we are challenging our students to read as much as they can by February 23. We are partnering with Learning Ally and the Greenville Drive Reading All-Stars to challenge our readers to become better leaders!

A Note from the Student Council
Eyeglass Recycling
Our Lakes and Bridges Student Council President recently attended the monthly meeting for the Lions Club of Easley. The Lions Club has many fundraisers and community efforts and we are happy to partner with them in their mission to provide eyeglasses to those in need. If you have any eyeglasses you are no longer using, please consider donating them. We have a collection bucket in the lobby. Any donated eyeglasses will be processed by the Lions Club for distribution to optical missions around the world. We are so proud of our Student Council President for her initiative and so glad to help our community at large!

8th Grade Art Auction to Support Their Field Trip
Our 8th grade students have created some truly stunning art that will soon go home with some lucky bidders. Proceeds from this art auction will go towards our 8th grade field trip in March. Our students are hoping to raise a total of $1000 to reduce the overall cost of the experience so that the per-student cost is as low as possible. They are hoping to make the trip affordable for all 8th grade students. Don't miss out on your opportunity to win one of their beautiful collaborative paper weavings. Each piece is mounted on black velvet, matted in white, and framed in a 24" x 24" black composite frame -- anyone would be thrilled to display one of these pieces in their home or office. All of our 8th grade students had a hand in creating each work of art, and three of them were made in tribute to Mrs. Beth Standridge, their beloved teacher who tragically and suddenly passed away in December. Please consider supporting these innovators as they work to raise funds! Online bidding is at https://givebutter.com/c/oQWtzc/auction . If you'd like to donate to their field trip, you may do so online at http://tinyurl.com/donateLABCS and include "8th Grade" in the notes field.
Clothing Guidelines
Thank you for checking that your child is leaving the house with appropriate clothing based on the school's handbook. We have seen an improvement with this. However, we are still seeing one area that needs monitoring, and it is the appropriate colors of bottoms (pants, shorts, skirts, jumpers, and skorts). Please see the guidelines from the handbook (pp. 34-37):
- COLORS of BOTTOMS - All shorts, pants, skirts, skorts, and jumpers can be solid colored khaki, navy blue, grey, or black. No patterns, prints, designs, or similar will be allowed. The waist can be elastic or regular.
