Dyslexia Tidbit - "Dyslexia at a Glance"
"Having a child diagnosed with dyslexia can be a traumatic experience. While dyslexia can make reading more difficult, with the right instruction, almost all individuals with dyslexia can learn to read. Many people with dyslexia have gone on to accomplish great things. Among the many dyslexia success stories are Thomas Edison, Stephen Spielberg, F. Scott Fitzgerald, and Charles Schwab.
Dyslexia is a neurological condition caused by a different wiring of the brain. There is no cure for dyslexia and individuals with this condition must learn coping strategies. Research indicates that dyslexia has no relationship to intelligence. Individuals with dyslexia are neither more nor less intelligent than the general population. But some say the way individuals with dyslexia think can actually be an asset in achieving success.
In public school settings where many teachers are not knowledgeable about this condition, students with dyslexia may be considered stupid or lazy. Parents who have children diagnosed with dyslexia should seek out reading instruction that is based upon a systematic and explicit understanding of language structure, including phonics. This reading instruction goes by many names, Structured Literacy, Orton- Gillingham, Simultaneous Multisensory, Explicit Phonics, and others (See IDA’s fact sheet Effective Reading Instruction). If you think you or your child may be dyslexic, you can take IDA’s test which will evaluate the chance that you have this condition." https://dyslexiaida.org/dyslexia-at-a-glance/

Thank you
- to the following for helping this summer to get the building and grounds prepped and ready for the renovations and new school year. It takes a village to make things happen, and these people answered our requests for help - taking care of the weeds in the entire parking lot, building furniture, moving lots of furniture, spiral binding agendas, and the list goes on. We wouldn’t be where we are a day before teachers arrive without ALL of you!! The Zack Family, Kathy and Eric Crouse, Matt Henderson, The House Family, Mr. and Mrs. Sharp and their granddaughter, Tim Bishop, Grey Disbrow, Madison Nease, Maggie Henderson, Jhon Duran, and Chris Wise;
- to Amazon.com and Gilstrap Family Dealerships for clearing and/or purchasing items off some of our teachers' Amazon Wish Lists;
- to the LABCS PTA for the delicious lunch for faculty/staff for Meet the Teacher; and
- to Susie Dooley and Connie McGahey, as well as any other volunteers, for helping to make our 6th Meet the Teacher day run so smoothly!
Our apologies in advance to anyone accidentally left off.

A Note from the Principal - Ms. Heidi Bishop
Welcome back for the 2023-2024 school year, which is our 6th year! I hope everyone's summer was relaxing, and everyone is ready to return for this school year! Our focus this year is on moving the needle through #growthandgoals with our students. We have an amazing returning and new faculty/staff, what we are calling our #dreamteam, this year, and we are all excited about working with your children this year! If there is anything you need, any questions or concerns you have, or if you just want to reach out to let us know what the faculty/staff and I are doing well, please email me at [email protected].
A Note from the Assistant Principal - Mrs. Wendye Henderson
I am excited to be serving as your assistant principal again this year. This is going to be a great year! We are focused on Growth and Goals and working as a collaborative team to support our students. Please know we are here for your students and if you have questions or concerns, please reach out. My email is [email protected]
Please look for further information from me as the Testing Coordinator regarding testing dates for the school year so that you can avoid scheduling trips or appointments on those dates.
A Note from the Front Office - Mrs. Kelly Disbrow
If you have not filled out your child's back to school registration packet be prepared to fill this out Monday morning when you drop your child off. Please come into the front office to complete this. It is very important these forms are filled out on the first day.
Supply and Tech fees will be invoiced through My School Bucks and these will come out next week.
A Note from the Nurse - Mrs. Dava House
Welcome back to Lakes and Bridges. I enjoyed meeting students and parents at Meet the Teacher and look forward to getting to know everyone. There are a few reminders for the health room:
- Medications must be dropped off in the front office.
- For medication to be given at school, we must have a written order from the doctor and written permission from the parent or legal guardian. Please contact me if you need a form to take to your doctor.
- Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or concerns. My office hours are 9:30-2:30 or you can contact me by email at [email protected].
A Note from Student Council - Mrs. Stephanie Phifer
One of the Student Council fundraisers is having ice cream available for purchase every Friday. There are a variety of different kinds, including non-dairy options. Students are only allowed to purchase one each Friday, and the cost is $1.
