Dyslexia Tidbit
Signs of Dyslexia
A young child with dyslexia may:
- Have trouble learning simple rhymes
- Be speech delayed
- Have a hard time following directions
- Have difficulty with short words; repeat or leave out words like and, the, but
- Have trouble differentiating left from right
In school, kids with dyslexia are likely to:
- Have significant difficulty learning to read, including trouble sounding out new words and counting the number of syllables in words
- Continue to reverse letters and numbers when reading (read bear as dees, for example) after most kids have stopped doing that, around the age of 8
- Struggle with taking notes and copying down words from the board
- Have difficulty rhyming, associating sounds with letters, and sequencing and ordering sounds
- Have trouble correctly spelling even familiar words; they will often spell them phonetically (cmpt instead of camped)
- Lack fluency in reading, continuing to read slowly when other kids are speeding ahead
- Avoid reading out loud in class
- Show signs of fatigue from reading with great effort
The impact of dyslexia doesn’t stop when class ends. The disorder can also affect kids outside of school. Children with dyslexia might also:
- Have trouble understanding logos and signs
- Have difficulty learning the rules to games
- Struggle to remember multi-step directions
- Have trouble reading clocks and telling time
- Have a particularly hard time learning a new language
- Have emotional outbursts as a result of frustration

Save the Date! Tee Up for Dyslexia, our 4th annual fundraising golf tournament will take place on Monday, November 6th, at the beautiful Southern Oaks Golf Club just down the road in Easley.
We would love for you to play with a team of four, be a tournament sponsor, donate goodies for player gift bags, or all three!

Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) September Challenge for Grades 3, 4, and 5
Students in 3rd through 5th grade will be receiving an SEL Bingo Challenge this week. Students are encouraged to work on this challenge throughout the month of September. Your student can complete one to two challenges a day, but they are not to do the entire board at once. The idea is to spread out the challenges so that good social/emotional habits can form. Parents, please initial the box when your child has completed each challenge.
If students complete the entire Bingo Board, they can return it at the end of the month for free ice cream. Parent/Guardian initials MUST be in each box to receive credit.
This is not a mandatory assignment, but it will be a fun way for your child to work on building their competency in Social-Emotional Learning.
If you have any questions about this challenge or the skills we work on during our SEL classes, please feel free to reach out to me ( [email protected]) .
A Note from the Transition's Director/Guidance Counselor
Mrs. Beth Standridge
This month, I have administered learning styles inventories and career interest inventories to all middle school students to help them begin to learn characteristics about themselves that will help them understand their learning styles and help guide them in their exploration of future career opportunities. We will begin to work on career portfolios soon that will help develop skills that will be very useful to students in high school and beyond. I have also gotten to spend a great deal of time with many of our elementary students, and I have enjoyed getting to know them.
I have sent a parent survey out via email to the 8th grade parents in order to gather some information about your ideas for next year's placement as we prepare for transition. If you have not filled that out yet, please do so as soon as possible so that I will know how to best help you as you explore your options for their next steps.
We will be sending home information in the next few days about some of the options for next year and open house/lottery dates.
I have really enjoyed working with Lakes and Bridges as a School Counselor this year! Please let me know if you have any questions, concerns or suggestions for me regarding helping your student academically, socially or emotionally. I look forward to hearing from you!

SAVE THE DATE!
3rd-5th Grade After-School Social
Friday, September 22 from 3:45-5:30
Our first after-school social will be held on Friday, September 22nd from 3:45-5:20. Students in grades 3-5 wishing to attend will stay after school and then be picked up in the car loop beginning at 5:20. Please pick your child up no later than 5:30. The cost to attend is $10 and includes pizza, chips, drinks, and a shaved ice from the Kona Ice truck. The after-school socials are always a blast with outdoor fun and games, karaoke, and face painting. There will be an after-school social for middle school students in grades 6-8 at a later date.
In order to make these events successful we need parent volunteers. Please email sphifer@labcharterschool.org if you are interested in helping at this event.
Another After-School Care Option
Palmetto Martial Arts is offering an after-school program for any parents who might be interested. They offer pickup from LABCS and charge a flat rate of $100 a week for 1-5 days (Monday - Friday). This price includes free access to their normal Taekwondo programs/classes at no extra cost. They also offer sibling discounts of $20 off each week for each subsequent child. For example: the oldest sibling would pay $100 a week, the second would only pay $80, and the third $60. Children can go directly from afterschool care into these classes on days when their respective age group/ranked class is scheduled. A free class uniform is included when you sign up.
They also offer extended care for teacher work days, as well as half days.
