Dyslexia Tidbit
What is Dyslexia?
"Dyslexia might best be described as an unexpected difficulty learning to read. Children with dyslexia struggle with phonology, or the recognition and manipulation of sounds in language. Dyslexia affects a child’s ability to decode words — to break them down into constituent sounds, or phonemes, and then to sound out novel words. That makes it hard to recognize words, to retrieve words, to read, to write, and to spell. Some children with dyslexia just have problems quickly retrieving words.
The result is a discrepancy between ability and achievement: a child who is struggling with reading despite having the intelligence to be a much better reader. A dyslexic child isn’t lacking in intelligence, and isn’t necessarily failing in school, since some kids with dyslexia, by putting in a great deal more effort than their peers, are able to keep up with their work, at least in the first few grades. However, it often becomes impossible for them to keep up by about third grade, when they are expected to be able to read fluently — quickly, easily and automatically.
While they may learn to read and compensate for reading weakness in other ways, children do not outgrow dyslexia."

A Note from the Principal
It is hard to believe that next week marks halfway through the first quarter of this school year! We are still making some adjustments to our PIE groups and hope to have those finalized soon. We are looking at several data points to help ensure we have the best groupings possible.
We are also noticing that not all students have the supplies needed from the supply list that was sent over the summer and then again at the beginning of the year. If you need help with purchasing these, please let Mrs. Disbrow or me know so that we can see how we can help. If you are a parent who would like to donate some of these items on the list, we would also appreciate it. We had several students who did not have their earbuds/headphones for MAP testing this week, and this was on the supply list to purchase. We had some earbuds that we let them borrow, but if you did purchase these, please make sure your child brings them to school and leaves them at school so they are available not only for testing purposes but for classroom purposes. You can generally pick these up at Dollar Tree, Dollar General, etc. for $5 or under. It is also important that the assignment 3-ring binders are no less than 1" and no larger than 2".
For the middle school math students, the three teachers in the math department will begin offering extra help from 3:30-4:00 during the week, except for Fridays. They will soon send out an email letting you know of their days available. If you are part of a carpool, and your child is staying, the rest of the carpool can go to the front lobby at 3:45, and the carpool can be picked up at 4:00 from that spot. This is a great opportunity for our students, and I know it was something I always took advantage of when my own children were in middle school and high school.
A Note from the Front Office
August lunch invoices are now in MySchoolBucks. All lunch invoices are due by September 20th.
New this year: If an invoice has not been paid the student will not be allowed to order a school lunch after the 20th until the invoice is paid in full. They must bring a lunch from home. We do not receive any reimbursement for school lunches, so any unpaid invoice comes out of the school's operating budget, which can have an adverse effect on purchasing needed items.
You can pay your invoice online through MySchoolBucks or you can send a check or cash. If you send a check or cash, please send it in an envelope labeled with the student's name and what it is for. You can print and include the invoice with your payment.
There will be no school lunch offered on Tuesday, September 5th since Pickens County schools will be out. ALL students will need to bring a lunch from home that day.
A Note from the Student Council
SAVE THE DATE!
3rd-5th Grade After-School Social
Friday, September 22 from 3:45-5:30
Our first after-school social will be held on Friday, September 22nd from 3:45-5:20. Students in grades 3-5 wishing to attend will stay after school and then be picked up in the car loop beginning at 5:20. Please pick your child up no later than 5:30. The cost to attend is $10 and includes pizza, chips, drinks, and a shaved ice from the Kona Ice truck. The after-school socials are always a blast with outdoor fun and games, karaoke, and face painting. There will be an after-school social for middle school students in grades 6-8 at a later date.
In order to make these events successful we need parent volunteers. Please email [email protected] if you are interested in helping at this event.
