Dyslexia Tidbit
Social and Emotional Impacts of Dyslexia
"While we tend to think of dyslexia as areading disorder, it also has an effect on a child’s social and communication skills. Since it can interfere with being able to retrieve words quickly, dyslexia can hinder a child’s ability to interact with peers in a typical way, and respond appropriately in social situations. “A dyslexic person who has word-finding difficulties can have trouble with their expressive language,” explains Scott Bezsylko, the executive director of Winston Preparatory School, which specializes in teaching kids with learning disorders. “That has a social impact, in addition to your difficulties with reading and writing, that make you feel not so good about yourself.”
Children who are dyslexic, at least until they are diagnosed, often become frustrated and ashamed at their inability to learn to read, and the implication that they are either lazy or stupid. “A lot of our work with dyslexic kids is to help them rediscover that they are smart and capable,' notes Beszylko, 'because they’ve stopped believing in themselves.' A Note from the Front Office
School t-shirts were issued this week. In order for your student to receive their shirt, their supply and tech fees must be paid in full, as well as any past-due lunch invoice.
Parents are able to set up accounts with PowerSchool to access their student's current grades, outstanding assignments, attendance, etc. If you have not done this and would like to please contact Kelly Disbrow, [email protected]. She will send you the instructions and your credentials.
The school has a uniform closet where we collect donated uniform pieces. Anyone is welcome to visit the uniform closet at any time and everything in there is free of charge. Please come to the front office for access.
A Note from the Testing Coordinator
The Cogat testing for our 2nd grade students will occur between October 15-19. Please make sure your child has had breakfast and is on time for school.
Our school will be using computers for state testing instead of paper/pencil this year. Students are working on typing at school but practicing at home is always encouraged. We want students to be proficient in their typing skills in order to focus their attention on what they are typing and not the process of typing.
Here is the link for our school's typing program. To access typing.com, please use the directions below to get into clever.com, which is where they will find the typing app. All children have been assigned and given their username and password. If they have difficulty remembering this, please reach out to Ms. Kane at [email protected].
To log in, simply navigate to clever.com/login and search for your child's school. Once found, Clever will remember your selection for future logins. No need to search again! Once you have selected your school, log in using your Badge or school-provided username and password.
A Note from the Student Wellness Coordinator
SEL Bingo Board Challenge
SEL Challenge for 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade can be turned in this week to Mrs. Phifer. If your child has completed the Bingo board, they will receive a Free Ice Cream Pass for Friday.
International Dot Day
International Dot Day, a celebration based on the book, The Dot by Peter Reynolds, was September 15th. Over the past two weeks in SEL classes, we have read the story and completed a variety of activities related to the book. We have talked about trying new and difficult things, facing challenges, artistic expression as a coping skill, encouragement, and perseverance. Students were also able to work on a couple different art projects thanks to the funding of a Donors Choose project! The concept for our art projects was simply this - start with a dot and see where it takes you. We used dot paints, then worked our way up to watercolors. We finished up with canvas paintings. Many of these canvas paintings will be on display in the school.
Coming up in SEL....
October is Bullying Prevention Month. For the month of October, our classes will focus on being able to identify bullying vs. conflict, learning the different types of bullying, and the roles people play in bullying situations. Students will also work on perspective taking and empathy skills.
A Note from the PTA
Keep an eye out for a fun spirit night in October!
A Note from the Development Director
We are launching our annual fundraising campaign beginning on October 1st to coincide with Dyslexia Awareness Month! It's estimated that one in five people have dyslexia, and we are the one in five. Your tax-deductible donations bring life to our school, ignite intellectual curiosity in our young scholars, and help us meet our financial needs. Beginning tomorrow, look for how you can Adopt an Innovator.
A Note from the Golf Tournament
Our fundraising golf tournament depends on sponsors to offset event costs so that more money goes to our school. Let's give a big round of applause to those who have signed on as sponsors so far:
- Janice and Roger Butts
- Bunton Exterminating
- 5Point Church
- The Roland Family
- Bonnie and Pat Kelly
- The Crader-Vaughn Family
- The Art Haven
There is still time to be a sponsor, register a team, and donate to the players' gift bags! To learn more, click here. Be sure to reach out Debbie Vaughn ( [email protected]) if you have any questions. Thank you!
Student Council Elections
Student Council Elections will be held on Tuesday, November 7th, 2023. Students in grades 1-8 can run for class representative. Students in grades 5-8 can run for an officer position (President, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer). Look for more information to come in next week's newsletter.
