Dyslexia Tidbit
Signs of Dyslexia - Grades K-2
"Many people know that dyslexia is a challenge with reading. But it’s more than that. Dyslexia is a challenge with language. That can make it hard to spot the signs. For instance, trouble with rhyming can be a sign of trouble with reading.
Dyslexia can also cause trouble with spelling, speaking, and writing. So signs can show up in a few areas, not just in reading.
People with dyslexia don’t all struggle in the same way. Some have a hard time with early reading skills like sounding out words (decoding). Some read words and sentences fine, but they have trouble understanding what they read.
Dyslexia can also look different as kids get older. Learn common signs of dyslexia at different ages and how to help."
Grades K–2 Signs of Dyslexia
-
Having trouble learning letter names and remembering the sounds they make
-
Often confusing letters that look similar (like b, d, p, and q) or sound similar (like f and v, b and p, or d and t)
-
Struggling to read familiar words (like cat), especially if there aren’t pictures
-
Substituting words when reading aloud, like saying house when the story says home
-
Having trouble separating the individual sounds in words and blending sounds to make a word
-
Having trouble remembering how words are spelled and applying spelling rules in writing

A Note from the Testing Coordinator
Due to some issues on NWEA's end this past week, 6th-8th grade MAP Testing will occur on Monday and Tuesday, September 9 and 10. We are proud of the flexibility of the students and faculty this week with this slight disruption to testing.
Please make sure your child gets a good night's sleep and has a healthy breakfast.
A Note from the Student Wellness Coordinator
The SEL Word of the Week: Mindset (n.); the attitudes a person holds about work, life, and school.
Competency: Self-Awareness
In SEL this week, classes will learn about having a positive, growth mindset. Being able to have a positive mindset is beneficial for so many reasons! It can reduce stress, improve mental and physical health, increase problem-solving and decision-making skills, enhance resiliency, increase productivity, and help to develop better coping skills.
SEL Tip of the week: Rose, Bud, Thorn
Ever ask your child how their day was and they say "good" or "fine" and getting them to elaborate is difficult? This is a common response from kids. A way to create more meaningful conversations with your child about school is to use the "Rose, Bud, Thorn" technique to elicit reflection about their day. Reflecting helps students and parents to praise and reinforce the positive behaviors, but it also helps to improve coping skills by brainstorming ways to overcome the challenges. Give it a try!
