Dyslexia Tidbit
How Common is Dyslexia?
"Dr. Sally Shaywitz, co-director of the Yale Center for Dyslexia and Creativity, estimates that 80 to 90 percent of children who struggle with learning disorders have dyslexia — as many as one in five children. Many dyslexic children go undiagnosed, she argues, and school failure that is attributed to environmental factors or intelligence is often undiagnosed dyslexia. Experts used to think that dyslexia was more common in boys than girls, but current research shows that it affects girls and boys equally."

A Note from the Front Office
Mrs. Kelly Disbrow, Mrs. Michelle Tennant, Mrs. Suzy Warwick
Please remember that all supply and tech fees are due September 10th. School t-shirts and Chromebooks will not be issued until these fees are paid.
All Early Stay and Lunch invoices are due on the 20th of each month. If payment is not received the student will not be able to utilize these services until the balance is paid in full.
Due to continued assessment and rearranging of some students for the best placement, PIE and MUS grades will not be included in this progress report. Unless you hear from your child's current teacher, your student is progressing.
A Note from the Golf Tournament Team
Save the Date! Tee Up for Dyslexia, our 4th annual fundraising golf tournament will take place on Monday, November 6th, at the beautiful Southern Oaks Golf Club just down the road in Easley.
We would love for you to play with a team of four, be a tournament sponsor, donate goodies for player gift bags, or all three!
More information can be found here.
A Note from the Development Director
Ms. Debbie Vaughn
We are thrilled to have a number of new students and families at Lakes and Bridges this year! In order to be transparent and communicative about our fundraising efforts, we would like to offer some insight into why we seek donations and the various ways in which we go about doing so.
You'll notice that there are a number of different fundraisers at our school-- everything from Chick-fil-A biscuit sales to Spirit Wear sales to our Tee Up for Dyslexia Fundraising Golf Tournament. Many groups work to coordinate these efforts: the PTA, the Student Council, the different event teams, and yours truly, the Development Director.
Each group's efforts benefit our students in unique ways. PTA funds go specifically to student programs and teachers. Student Council funds go back to events sponsored by the group, such as After-School Socials, the 8th Grade Semi-Formal, and more. Fundraising events such as the fall Golf Tournament and the spring Gala generally have a particular aim, such as building renovations, maintenance and upgrades, or other programs and services that aren't covered by public monies. The Development Director spearheads the events, writes grants, and works with the Board to seek major and recurring gifts.
This is a lot! And it is ALL done for the purpose of supporting our amazing students by building strong bridges between dyslexia and academic success.

Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) September Challenge for Grades 3, 4, and 5
Students in 3rd through 5th grade will be receiving an SEL Bingo Challenge this week. Students are encouraged to work on this challenge throughout the month of September. Your student can complete one to two challenges a day, but they are not to do the entire board at once. The idea is to spread out the challenges so that good social/emotional habits can form. Parents, please initial the box when your child has completed each challenge.
If students complete the entire Bingo Board, they can return it at the end of the month for free ice cream. Parent/Guardian initials MUST be in each box to receive credit.
This is not a mandatory assignment, but it will be a fun way for your child to work on building their competency in Social-Emotional Learning.
If you have any questions about this challenge or the skills we work on during our SEL classes, please feel free to reach out to me ( [email protected]).
A Note from the Student Council
SAVE THE DATE!
3rd-5th Grade After-School Social
Friday, September 22 from 3:45-5:30
Our first after-school social will be held on Friday, September 22nd from 3:45-5:20. Students in grades 3-5 wishing to attend will stay after school and then be picked up in the car loop beginning at 5:20. Please pick your child up no later than 5:30. The cost to attend is $10 and includes pizza, chips, drinks, and a shaved ice from the Kona Ice truck. The after-school socials are always a blast with outdoor fun and games, karaoke, and face painting. There will be an after-school social for middle school students in grades 6-8 at a later date.
In order to make these events successful we need parent volunteers. Please email [email protected] if you are interested in helping at this event.
Another After-School Care Option
Palmetto Martial Arts is offering an after-school program for any parents who might be interested. They offer pickup from LABCS and charge a flat rate of $100 a week for 1-5 days (Monday - Friday). This price includes free access to their normal Taekwondo programs/classes at no extra cost. They also offer sibling discounts of $20 off each week for each subsequent child. For example: the oldest sibling would pay $100 a week, the second would only pay $80, and the third $60. Children can go directly from afterschool care into these classes on days when their respective age group/ranked class is scheduled. A free class uniform is included when you sign up.
They also offer extended care for teacher work days, as well as half days.
